Donna Leon – Uniform Justice

Novel: Commissario Brunetti‘s 12th Case

First Broadcast: November 10th 2005

Storyline

The Military Academy San Martino is one of the elite schools of Venice, attended by the sons of respectable families. During the early hours of a rainy and cold autumn day, the 17-year-old Ernesto Moro is found hanged in the bathroom, shadowing the elite private school.

During Commissario Brunetti and his assistant, Sergente Vianello’s, chat with classmates of the deceased, it would seem that nobody allegedly knew him closer and that no one had noticed anything unusual about his recent behaviour. Nothing further is known by the school board and both Brunetti and Vianello have the feeling that something is being kept from them.

Upon his return to the Questura, Vice Questore Patta demands to be informed about the status of investigations. Since the father of the dead man was the prominent physician and politician Fernando Moro and Patta is very reluctant to mess with prominent families in the city, he would prefer to submit the case to the Court.

Although the pathologist also concludes that this is a case of suicide, Brunetti is convinced of the contrary and continues his investigation.

During a conversation of Commissario Brunetti’s with Fernando Moro, he also gives the impression that he was not willing to cooperate, whereupon Brunetti becomes initially curious about the former politician.

Moro was, until shortly before his retirement from politics, member of a parliamentary committee, whose jurisdiction includes the allocation of funds to the military. The life of the Moro family changed about two years ago. As the wife of Fernando Moro took a walk in the woods, he was mysteriously shot in a hunting accident. Shortly after, Fernando Moro retired from politics.

According to the information collected by Brunetti, the couple seems to be living separately and Ernesto Moro’s seems to be untraceable. Signorina Elletra’s research leads to the finding that the girl was brought to an undisclosed location. Brunetti is confident that this past is the reason for the recent events.

Elettra’s further investigations show that Marcello Filippi has earned the defence contracts, provided to him by the previous Secretary of State. At this time, Fernando Moro was about to uncover this scandal, which was, however, hindered because of the events involving his family.

While Commissario Brunetti's investigation is being continued, his son, Raffi, who is currently interning at the police, speaks with the classmates of the dead cadet. As they are about the same age, Ernesto Moro’s classmates confide in him and Raffi finds out that Enzo, Marcello Filippi’s son, frightened and blackmailed his classmates with his sadistic tendencies.

Is this the reason for Ernesto Moro’s death?
